One of my friends bought a house with an old carpenter workshop. In this workshop he found some old planks with lots of dust. The old company that used to be in the workshop went out of business at the end of 1958. These planks could have been there since then.

He gave them to me as payment for some guitar repairs. One of the planks was an old Paduak. This wood is kind of heavy but very nice to look at. When planned or sanded, it turns very red, like meat. The tap tone of this wood was very strong, like a bell. I decided to make a DC with no extra color. The wood is kind of fat so you do not need any lacquer.

The tap tone of this body is very strong in the top end and little weaker in the lower part. If I put an ordinary maple neck I would have problem with the bass part. If the bass isn’t there, you can’t add it with some “bassy” pickups. I need to add the bass with a more “bassy” neck so I started to look for some mahogany.

In my home town is an old boatyard that used to make boats in mahogany. They started after the First World War around 1920, and they are still in business. I told them what I was looking for and they invited me to their company. When I saw their stock pile I just stood there in mute amazement. Some of their planks were more than 50 years old. After some negotiation I had bought a 50 years old plank, enough for making 4 necks. The tap tone in this wood was amazing.

I made the neck with a fretboard in rosewood. I had never made a guitar in such screaming woods before so I was very excited of how this would be. The combination was magic. I stringed the guitars without pickups just to listen to the “song” of the guitars. The set of overtones is very different on this guitar than others and I get stuck with this one for many hours. It has such a sweet song and it gets even better while I was playing. Incredible dynamics and a beautiful sustain.

I tested some pickups for this guitar and after a while I chose a set of APC pickups. These pickups really enhance the tone of the guitar. The dynamics is wonderful. I remember that I made a decision not to sell this one. I was so pleased with the result of the neck and body combination. But as always, I sold it. And I missed it so much.
